Cheerful vs Charity?

Our Bible says, ‘The Lord loves a cheerful giver…’

Now, many of course presume to take this simply as one’s tithing to their choice of place of worship, etc…But, what about at Christmas? While we are all frantically trying to beat the clock ticking ever faster towards the 25th, what motivates us? What reactions there will be for those we have given gifts to? Or perhaps there is some latent feelings of obligation, towards perhaps an estranged friend, or even a family member?

Yes, most of us North Americans pretty well take it for granted, that someone will give us at least one present…The ‘Occupy’ Movement, that started out as a plea for changes for better distributions of wealth among the proverbial have-nots, was indeed a noble, worthy cause; but like it, has the very celebration of ‘Christmas’ gotten bogged down and over crowded with so many add-ons and tales and myths, been lost for its original intended celebration?

As I type this, there are literally hundreds all over this world of ours, dying of starvation, malnutrition, or revolts, protests and wars…But, I wish to not bring pessimism to this always Festive Season, but rather, maybe a little message of hope and peace…Earlier Blogs of mine have referenced ideals for what one person can do, to make effective and notable changes within our society…far too often, we shrug, reassure ourselves that ‘someone else’ can rise to the challenge and cause of shining even a glimmer of light into someone else’s darkened world…

But, what if we ALL thought and felt that way? Well, sadly, BECAUSE so much IS happening internationally, it is far too painfully obvious, that so much more is needed to be done and accomplished. When is the last time you happened upon someone begging for some spare change? And then lowered your eyes, stepping up your pace just a little faster to avoid their out-stretched hand? One person connecting with one other person…that all it takes really…

Jesus when on Earth knew that for thousands of years to come, said the declaration, “The poor will be among you always…” Yep, someone elses problem, if they only just got a job, well, then all their problems would be solved, right? Well, perhaps a much smaller degree of noticing this in Canada than in the USA, there ARE the poor and destitute among us today…If we will even look back over the past few years, what with recessions, etc, thousands…think about that, THOUSANDS of people who had good paying careers, are now unemployed, and yes, homeless…

We ‘sheltered Canadians’ are somewhat well off for the most part…but, even more so, what would some spare change a month do? What would you like it to do? What could you do with it tomorrow…or even today?

I wish for one and all, a truly Very Merry Christmas, and a Joyous, Hopeful 2012…

Peace vs Prosperity?

Christmas Day 2011 will soon be upon us…with Billions of fellow humans around the world in celebrating either The Saviour’s Birth, and/or at least another day off work…This year has been marked in great detail with the deaths of many a harsh dictator, and now, recent news of North Korea’s leader now gone as well.

What with all the ever-increasing unrest, strife, conflict, wars and famines all over our globe, one wonders if ‘Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all men’, is something now to be only dreamt of…something unatainable…something impossible?

Well, one person did tell us, that it can be possible…one person shared of how His Father’s Love for everyone, can help us to also realise, that in sharing that very love with others, whether friend or foe, can truly make the world a better place. But, sadly, the very religious leaders of His day, those that He spoke out against, those that he pointed out that ‘their’ ways only led to a life filled with guilt, burden and grief, were then to be the instigators of His eventual cruel torture and subsequent death. Yes, His message of Peace, Love, and Hope, was to be quashed, eradicated and dismissed…but, as most of us know, His message, His life, His Love and His conquering of death, left us all to have that very Peace, Love and Hope…all it takes is a decision, a committment, a heart-felt wanting of it all.

He never promised ‘Life’ would be then spent on ‘Easy Street’ and full of prosperity; in spite of what some erroneous ones even on so-called ‘Christian’ TV programs would have you think…No, He did say, even the rain will fall on the just and the unjust…even ‘the world’ will hate you for wanting to just simply live a life of sharing with others, the very Peace, Love and Hope, that we ALL can have…

But yes, many of us get lured into a false hope of ‘Riches and Prosperity’ here on earth; no wonder so many at THIS time of year, are far more depressed and in sorrow that ever before during the year; no wonder this year brings an even higher number of suicides…He even spoke to us all, with a reminder of ‘Blessed be the poor…’ And He also had a strong message for the ‘rich’ all around us…

‘What can we do?’ some would ask in lament…well, it really doesn’t take much you know; a Christmas card sent to a family member that has been estranged from you, and simply signed ‘Love Always’; an email sent to a long-lost friend, a smile, and yes a cup of coffee shared with a friend that is hurting and/or ‘in need’…

What can make ‘the world’ a better place? Can one person really make a difference?

Well, one person came to our ever wildly spinning ol’ world, and look at the difference HE made for us all…

Share a smile, send a card, click on ‘Send’ for even a brief email…even strangers will usually smile back in return…

Which would you rather have, Contented Peace? Or Selfish Prosperity?

Remembrance vs. Reminders?

“War, what is it good for, absolutely nothin’…”

Yes, for those who will remember Edwin Starr’s anti-war song from 1970, at a height of the Vietnam War, and regarding the killings at Kent State University, also in 1970, could most likely agree with me; War(s) kill humans.

And here we are, decades later, and now witnessing a variety of world-wide protests; one subject of course, being the War in Afghanistan. And, as I have predicted in previous blogs, violence and yes, even deaths have occurred at some protest sites. Where and when will the escalating protests stop? Well, now there is something to watch…

Now here we are, on Canada’s Remembrance Day, with even present day reminders of what war is, and how it affects not only the Veterans, but we civilians as well. Past wars were fought for our very democratic freedoms; one could pause to really dig deep to see if there were any anti-war protests way back when, during World Wars 1 and 2, and even the Korean War.

Fast forward to today’s world, and because of ‘wars’, several greedy, despicable dictators have been overthrown; some even killed. Now, am I here today to step upon the proverbial soap box against war? No…But, am I also against legitimate PEACEFUL protests against certain injustices in society? Again, no…

However, I do find it quite ironic, that the very protesters against war violence, far too often resort to said violence themselves in their protests…hmmm, a bit hypocritical methinks?

But in truth, where does one draw the line between a ‘valid’ war, vs. an ‘invalid’ one? Should North America and Nato have remained silent, and let Extremist Terrorists run rampant all over our globe, and left unchecked, someday entrench themselves so much, that the majority of our planet is then under Taliban Rule?

Careful Dear Readers, it may well yet be something to come to pass…

Occupy vs Outrage?

Let’s face it, many of us are now to the point of asking; ‘Good Grief, what next is going to be occupied?’

For those of you following this now global cause for social and financial ‘justice’, the crowds are diminishing many areas, while those still in the firm stances are clearly becoming more and more outraged at what they feel is little to no action being taken. Their protests are in part quite understandable, in that a very small minority of humans, hold the vast majority of financial wealth and power world-wide.

Sadly though, there has been seen over and over, other fringe elements trying to infiltrate the various locations with their soap boxes as well. From Communists to Muslims to…well, you name it, some ’cause’ or group is also shouting out their various agendas. As I have speculated in other Blogs, it might not take too big of a match to ignite some very potent, unstable, and very flammable emotions now simmering below the social masks of thousands (millions?) of people all over our planet, to erupt in riots, violence, chaos, etc.

I would propose however, to all the ‘Occupy’ groups world-wide, to perhaps consider some other targets, that equally, if not more so, to be protested against in various cities. Known drug dealers; go protest at their houses and hideouts. Known pornography producers; go protest at their homes, etc. Known Mafia leaders; go protest at their homes, etc. Known…well, you are most likely thinking of a myriad of examples already…

But really, what kind of changes would then be made, COULD then be made, all over our real estate we call ‘Planet Earth’?

Defeat vs Death

To say most of the world, even the Arab nations, were thrilled with the news of the capture of Gaddafi, and his subsequent death, would be quite an understatement indeed. The ongoing siege of Libya by rebel forces, supported by NATO, captured our interest for months. As many other Arab nations had succumbed to the ever-increasing protests by disenchanted citizens, it was only a matter of time before Gaddafi would be next for being ousted.

But as other tyrannical despots have done, they fought to the proverbial bitter end, and as with Saddam, Gaddafi was also caught in rather un-dictator-like surroundings. His capture in a sewage drainage pipe was truly a fitting end for his oppressive rule.

Now the question that echoes through the minds of many is, should he have been shot so soon after, or should he have been brought to trial? Few would argue that had he lived, many guilty verdicts would have been imposed over his long-standing cruelty over his own people. But would then the final judgement have been death anyway?

Logic would dictate that obviously some over enthusiastic rebel in the crowd that captured him took matters into his own impulsive hands and pulled the trigger for pent-up vengeance and retribution. And so as the world has seen the videos and picture, death came to a defeated despot.

One could certainly wonder, what is next for several other Arab nations currently under siege as it were, if other rulers will face the same fate as Gaddafi? Already those in Syria are calling for their leaders demise; will this continue to escalate to encompass a world-wide outpouring of revenge against other regimes of oppression?

And to beg forgiveness in advance, for referencing this again, but what of the continuing “Occupy” protests now world-wide; how soon will it be for some in the crowds to instigate more than simple ‘Peaceful Protests’ and escalating violence gets out of control?

Who may be next to be in the gun sight cross-hairs of some trigger happy individual, intent on bringing down someone he or she feels deserves the ‘final solution’?

Could this actually happen ‘over here’?

Power vs Poverty?

We (North Americans) all watched with various emotional reactions of the protests-turned-into-revolutions in several Middle East countries over the past few months, in bids to overthrow tyrannical dictators, with way too much power…and certainly way too much money…

We saw as country after country, regime upon regime, being overtaken by the ‘average citizen’, and wrongs to some extent being made right. We also then commented, speculated and mused over many a coffee break and other social gathering, of how it was a good thing that so many long-term despots were finally out of power, and that a sense of relief as it were, came to not only the countries in question, but to the world in general.

Also though, most of us were almost self-congratulatory, that it is a good thing such events were not happening “over here”; well, save for the Toronto and Vancouver riots, but hey, that was over shady politics and hockey…right? Hmm…well, fast forward to the past month, and we have seen the OWS (Occupy Wall Street) crowds grow ever increasingly, and more vocal, to now literally countries all over the world, yes Canada included, to have similar ‘protests’.

One wonders, with the cry from ‘The people’ en masse, to no longer have a very few control a very great amount of power…and money. Sound familiar? Could then the same outburst of protest erupt into mass carnage, violence, and pent-up rage happen ‘over here’?

Well, again I would remind you dear readers, OF Toronto and Vancouver…they were but only training grounds for those, excuse the expression, ‘hell bent’ on simply being destructive, violent and anti-anything that is ‘establishment’. It did not take much in the other riots to unfold into what we saw, and sadly, I fear it may not take much either before something or someone, somewhere, will ignite the torches of outright rebellion into utter chaos…

I for one, am going to be very relieved if it does not happen…but, what if it does? I need not go into the countless Biblical Predictions of lawlessness in the proverbial ‘Last Days’…are we seeing the seeds of this already?

Propaganda vs Pornography?

Dear Readers,

Before you raise up in ire on which side of the whole ‘LGBT’, etc, etc, ’rights’ issue you or I are on, I would draw your attention to the following information;

Firstly, this article stems from a recent publication in The National Post, concerning what The Canadian Values of Canada Organization feels is wrong in so many ways, about the so-called ‘education’ of children starting in even from Junior Kindergarden (4 years old) into Elementary Schools about homosexual, trans-sexual, transgendered, inter-sexed or ‘two’ spirited individuals. (See also the advertisement below)

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/national-post-gets-heat-running-apparent-anti-gay-165525989.html

Now, after you have mulled over that tidbit of Journalism, ask yourself, ‘Would I want my 4 year old boy or girl taught such topics in school?’

I will presume most of you would answer loudly, “NO!”.

Why then, would a blatantly, militant homosexual publication be trying to encourage it?

I am all for sex education, in its right context, and ‘Age Appropriate’ settings, but really, for children this young to have this implanted in their minds? 4 years old? Really? Seriously?

Ah, yes, I see some already who are on their soap-boxes, screaming shrilly against me already that I am against homosexuals, and am a bigot…Rrrrright…I am a bigot because I think explicit sex education ‘too soon’, IS too soon?…I have not said anything of the kind…

Ok, moving right along then shall we?

In this usual ‘show and tell’ classroom style of teaching, a variety of sexual acts are also being taught; yes, as young as children 4 years old (Junior Kindergarden)…

To put that in a legal perspective, would you want a stranger down the street to be ‘teaching’ via show and tell, all about sex to YOUR young children? Ahh, no “yes’s” in the crowd…Gee, is that because if your child came running home and said that adult down the street invited them inside and told (and showed) them ‘all about sex’, you would immediately call the police to arrest said ‘educator’ for being a child molester?
Yep, I think you would…so, why then, do we shrug off THE VERY SAME THING, when it is being ‘taught’ thusly in a classroom in a school?

Still not convinced?

Let’s now look to the Canadian Criminal Code, and see what it has to say;

http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/Search/Search.aspx?txtS3archA11=child&txtT1tl3=%22Criminal+Code%22&h1ts0n1y=0&ddC0nt3ntTyp3=Acts

Yes, there it is Folks, such ‘acts’, or whatever else you or others may choose to call it, is an actual criminal act against any ‘child’ under 16 years old…(In the ad below, children from “JK to Grade 3″ = Children from ages 4 to 8 are being taught this…)

So, again, the question begs to be asked, AND answered, “Why is this being allowed from Junior Kindergarden into the elementary schools?”

Alzheimers vs Alienation

TV 'Evangelist' Pat Robertson has recently come under fire and condemnation recently, for his advice to a caller to his show, that it is ok to divorce someone who has Alzheimer's Disease...

His views are, that the disease is 'like death' anyway, so this, in his opinion, should be ok and allowed for a person to be divorced from said spouse; but he added that there should be a care program set up for the afflicted person before the divorce...Rrrrright...

Hmm, so the good old marriage vows of 'Til death do us part', or 'in sickness and health', 'for better or worse', according to Pat are now no longer applicable? One wonders what would be next on the alienation from one's spouse; Cancer? or some other terminal disease or affliction?

For those of you who know me, yes, I have been married and divorced more than once, so I am certainly not the first one to be in line to throw any stones; but really, divorce is far too easy these days...and sadly so...

But also, shouldn't there be some end in sight for more and more and MORE 'allowable' divorce excuses?

10 Minutes Vs. 10 Years

September 11th, 2001; pretty well everyone within range of anything remotely ‘civilized’, or at least close to it, remembers where they were and what they were doing on that morning…

But, one wonders, in even the 10 minutes previous to the start of those tragic events, if what was pre-occupying our minds is still remembered; even the 10 hours before, or 10 days before…

Life, so to speak, was running mostly normal for most people, some were preparing for a good day ahead, some perhaps even dreading the day ahead for what work may have in store. The skies were clear on the East Coast that day, and who could have possibly known what was to come?

While many of us will pause to remember in each our chosen way, of the thousands of lives lost, and then too look back on how our world HAS changed over the past 10 years, how many will yet remember, of what we were doing in those brief 10 minutes before the first plane hit into the first tower…and then precious life snuffed out…

In perhaps the same amount of time it will take you to read this, ponder what will the next 10 years bring for you, and me, and everyone we know? What additional changes will we go through, endure and even accomplish in life? What will even your next 10 minutes be like?

Labour vs. Laziness

Yes, that topic above will no doubt bring some to cringe over even just reading it…

But for some, ‘Laziness’ has become a way of life; whether by circumstance or choice, some just really do not want to work to live. Some of course have lost their jobs because of company downsizing, or worse yet, total closure. But these souls then still have a choice as to whether or not to seek alternate means of gainful employment, or just literally sit around the house all day, hoping some magical job fairy will appear at their door, with just the perfect job for them.

Well, of course there is no such reality…and too, some of us, like myself, are off work with either injury or illness, which hopefully, will be a short-term, not a long-term situation.

But for those able-bodied souls, who just refuse an honest days work for an honest days pay, should the government still support such slothful souls? Perhaps some kind of ‘litmus test’ should be utilized for those who just will not ‘work’, but would rather live off the taxpayer’s expense?

One thing I do know, as do millions of others, a good job that one is employed at, certainly does bring a sense of self-worth, and even emotional satisfaction and purpose. While not everyone has ‘The Perfect Job’, whatever THAT may be these days, ‘a job is a job’, and that my friends, means feeding oneself, and family…

Haste & Hostility

Well Folks, what with the ongoing reports of Hurricane Irene, and her spiraling path of destruction that continues onwards up the Eastern Seaboard of the USA and soon to reach our Canadian Soils, most of us are bracing, just in case, for what may or may not be 'The Storm of the Summer'.

But I could not help but think, that what with said hasty preparations many of us are taking, and cities, etc, being evacuated no less, How do we prepare for other 'storms' in our lives? While some may very well be 'Hurricane-proof' in our homes, are we jobless-proof? Are we terminal illness-proof? Are we divorce-proof? Well, the list could go on of course...How we 'survive' from said storms in our lives, and/or how we seek help in such instances, now there is often the 'measure' of what we are...

But, on a lighter note, in also seeing the continual reports of Libya's 'former' hostile dictator, I can not help but think now that perhaps said storms should be renamed, for notorious, hostile dictators and the like?

Hurricane Gaddafi? Earthquake Hussein? Tropical Storm Mubarak? Tsunami Hitler? ;-)

Right vs Might

Well Folks, as you all have been reading these past few weeks, I have been commenting, sometimes wryly, sometimes tongue in cheek, about the rather sad, sordid state of affairs in our ever wildly spinning world of ours. What with protests gone bad, horribly bad, to countries in chaos and despair, and even individual stories of shame and sorrow.

But, as most of you all know me so well, I am also one to find the proverbial glass half full; so instead of finding stories about what all IS going wrong with things currently, (And really, you do not have to look too far!) I decided to make an effort to seek out news-worthy items that are GOOD.

Well, believe it or not, of all places to be a light of hope for humanity and our very morals, was none other than Japan…yes, you read that right…Japan; where not that long ago, unimaginable horrors were happening with several earthquakes and the various aftermath of such.
So, what could possible be happening ‘over there’ to have even a glimmer of hope for us? Well, I will place in here a quote from one of the news agencies writings:

“The earthquake and tsunami that walloped Japan left much of its coastline ravaged, but left one thing intact: the Japanese reputation for honesty.
In the five months since the disaster struck, people have turned in thousands of wallets found in the debris, containing $48 million in cash.
More than 5,700 safes that washed ashore along Japan’s tsunami-ravaged coast have also been hauled to police centers by volunteers and search and rescue crews. Inside those safes officials found $30 million in cash. One safe alone, contained the equivalent of $1 million.”

Is that possible? Can that be real? Yes, it is…I have checked various sources, and only to find the same thing; this actually has happened…

Think about that…the total now stands at over 78 MILLION dollars worth of CASH returned…

What would YOU do, if you found a safe containing One Million Dollars in CASH?
Would you honestly return it? No questions asked, no hesitations, no lingering doubts?

How any of your friends that you know, would do such a thing? Untraceable, undetectable, cold hard cash of one million dollars?…Well, it seems that even in ‘Secular Japan’, doing the RIGHT thing, still does exist…

Perhaps we can all learn a valuable lesson from this?

Peace vs. Protest

“Peaceful Protest”…

Sadly, those words over the past few years, really have lost their meaning, or at least, their intent. Having been glued to our TV screens this past week watching in shock as the rioting, looting, and even murders happen in London, England, some have even wryly commented, ‘Well, at least Vancouver wasn’t so bad’…

To say things got out of control, in what was originally supposed to be a simple ‘protest’, would certainly be a major understatement. Most of the civilized world, is shaking its head in dismay, for what most of us had perceived as a peaceful country, now run wild with those intent purely on wide-scale criminal acts.

It has also been brought to light, that, as with Vancouver, there are the poorest of poor committing the crimes along side sons and daughters of millionaires. What common thread could have caused such a thing? Many ask this, but also many are without answers. Even those caught and captured so far, are almost at a loss to explain even their own wanton acts of criminal behaviour; ‘It wasn’t like me’, many have said or even lamented.

At the risk of repetition from some of my other posts, take a look at the big picture in our world folks; pick a country, anywhere on the globe, and you will find almost daily as of late, unrest, war, rumours of war, violent protests, civil disobedience…well, the list could go on with various descriptive adjectives…

Should we run for the hills and hide away like hermits?

Should we start counting down the Doomsday Clock already?

Not to sound simplistic, but, how many of us have even thought to pray for the ones ‘over there’?
London, Syria, Libya, Egypt, Greece, and countless other cities and countries ‘under siege’ have so many who are NOT involved with all the carnage that we see daily displayed for our ever watchful eyes to see…

But, maybe instead, just be at peace tonight, knowing ‘us over here’ are safe…well…for today…?

Left vs Right?

And so, the U2 concert has come and gone from Moncton NB, in what many have said, was “THE” Greatest music concert Moncton, well, The Maritimes, has ever seen. And too, the whole tour broke records for being the highest money-maker of all rock tours previously. If Greater Moncton was not on the world map before, it sure is now…

So, now that the proverbial dust has settled, the grounds cleaned up, and the last echoes of songs still in the minds of many a concert-goer, there are a myriad of thoughts, opinions, and even beliefs as to what, or “who” U2 is; as a band, and individuals…

As I touched upon last week, U2, like any entity and as individuals, have made some mistakes; what with the afore-mentioned ”ONE” Scandal, and its subsequent fall out, many had for a time, cast a skeptical eye at the Boys from Ireland. But, rally they did, explained the actual purpose and motives and directives of the “ONE” Campaign, and their message of bringing awareness to the plight those desperately in need…

For some however, they are just another rock and roll band; satanic worshipping, youth corrupting hooligans… without of course, even listening to their music, their words, and their countless quotes about their Christian Faith and deep-rooted beliefs.

Others of course have followed their paths for years, and have seen their ups and downs, and also their publically declared admittance to having ‘fallen’ at times, but, as Jesus does with ALL of us, they too are forgiven for their transgressions…Even the very famous Television evangelist Bill Hybels did an in-depth interview with lead singer Bono awhile back, and his challenge to the Christian Community as a whole, and also professed openly his faith.
Also, U2′s newer songs are also reflecting a ‘Return to God’ and repentance…

Can we do any less, as Jesus would in forgiving them, also be as forgiving? There are some, sadly, that still operate under a Pharisee mindset, in that they see sin ‘everywhere’, and are, excuse the expression, hell-bent on extreme persecution of ‘the sinner’, instead of loving them into The Kingdom…

Is U2 ‘perfect’? No; are all the band members ‘perfect’? No; Are WE all ‘perfect’? Well, I think all of us can look in our individual mirrors and honestly answer that question…

John 8: 7 to 11, is but only one example of Christ’s Love, Forgiveness, and call to Redemption; or, as I have often recited, and borrowed from a Great Friend, Karl Ingersoll from years ago, Jesus came with arms wide open to all; He DIED with arms wide open to all; He rose again with arms open to all…He did not point an accusing finger at ‘sinners’…He did not condemn those of us trudging through life, and yes, sinning as we have; no, his condemnation was for the ‘Religious Leaders’ of the day, and their harsh stance with those ‘beneath them’.

I would challenge these ‘Pharisees’ still living among us today, whether they be Christian, Jew, or any other faith, to let go of the self-imposed power, to let go of hateful retribution against those that they feel are ‘worse than them’, and maybe, just maybe, do as Jesus commanded, and yes, even Bono reminds us, and have compassion, love and caring for all those who need our help…

Condemnation or Love? Well, it is a choice after all, isn’t it?

Acclaim vs. Accountability

“U2″…Just those 2 characters, a letter and a number, are pretty well-recognized world-wide for being the ‘name’ of the Rock Band from Ireland…To say they have fame Internationally for their music would clearly be a huge understatement, but also their notoriety for speaking out against social injustice, political corruption and ineffectiveness, and even chastising many a ‘religious institution’, are very well-known and publicised.

Tonight in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, they are performing at the now popular outdoor concert site, for this their last show on their ’360 degree World Tour’, with many a special musical guest and celebrity also to be in attendance their big finale. Bono and the Boys have brought much to not only the world of music, but to even our social conscience as well; their often-times zealous outpouring of their ‘change the world’ ideals.

But, as some may or may not know, this same ‘beloved’ group of well-meaning guys, had a major scandal about a year ago, concerning their ‘Charity’ Organization, named “ONE”. It was supposed to have been to feed hungry children world-wide; sounds like a great concept and ideal, right? Well, when the news became public, that about only 1% of the contributions actually went towards said children in need, and that the majority of the money went for staff salaries, self-promotion and ‘infrastructure’, well, the very credibility of U2, with their long-standing position ‘Against’ such tactics, left a very bitter taste indeed in the mouths of their fans.

Now, I am not here to belittle U2, or their musical career, or even hype this scandal, but perhaps what I am thinking about, is the way we often view such celebrities as beyond reproach; even though what with the latest news of the death of Amy Winehouse, and then more sordid details of others like her who have passed on because of a destructive lifestyle, we still far too often, raise up on pedestals, those who really, are not setting great examples, even if for our children?

They are all human…flawed, imperfect, and yes, mistakes, poor decisions and choices get made…
Perhaps, one should consider the ‘worship’ of them, and the inevitable falls that often do happen, even with those constantly in the spotlight?

Attacks vs. Apathy

Shock…Disbelief…Shaken Complacency…The endless adjectives are, and continue to be spoken over the recent ‘Terrorist’ attacks in Norway; one that some tourists lamented on, was that it reminded them of ’9/11′ all over again. Yes, once again many innocent lives were lost, at the hands of a very few, in what was a very tragic incident indeed.

Not only was the car bomb a shock in itself, right downtown by several key government buildings, but to then witness the aftermath of dozens of children of various government officials being shot en mass was even more horrific.

Of course, the initial reports and various analysis are showing that it was not the doings of any Al Qaeda sect, but that of a couple (so far) of Norwegian Citizens themselves; This would be akin to if the 9/11 attacks were by some ‘good ol’ American Boys’, instead of the ones that committed those Terrorist Attacks almost 10 years ago.

Did anyone in Norway, a normally peaceful and somewhat neutral country, see this coming? Most likely not. Then again, did most American citizens, unaware of the constant CIA, NSA, and various other covert organizations workings, see 9/11 coming? Sadly, no…

We react in shock, disbelief and horror, when we see such things happening lately in our world, but really, should we be ‘surprised’ over all of them? We also see now as well, wide-spread famine in several countries in Africa, and thankfully, the Canadian Government has taken measures, in millions of dollars worth, to aid the starving ‘over there’. But, we are sitting in front of our Televisions, radios, and computers with online news media access, shake our heads, wring our hands, and even pray for ‘them’…But…then what do we do?

What do we do…what CAN we do? Well, as my wife and I lamented even today, sadly, we can not save them all, as much as our hearts would love to…We do currently sponsor 2 children in need, one in India, the other in Uganda, but, to save all children world-wide, well, of course logistically and financially, no one person could ever hope to accomplish such a noble feat.

But, not to take a stand on a soapbox, but one wonders, if every family in North America, sponsored but one child, heck, if even every church sponsored but ONE CHILD, what a difference could that then make on this ever wildly spinning globe we call ‘Home’? (The average cost by the way, is less than a Medium cup of coffee a day at Tim Horton’s…)

Failure vs. Recall

In reading through a few newsworthy items this week on a variety of websites, in the 15 to 20 minutes I can endure at a keyboard at any given time, one particular item caught my eye...well, BOTH eyes actually ;-)

It was that of a new recall of 280,000 Ram & Dodge Pickup trucks, relating to a possible steering failure; which, left unattended, may lead to loss of steering control...Yes, LOSS of steering control. Having a 2009 Ram (Dodge) 4x4 Hemi pickup truck myself, naturally this immediately had me take notice and read the details. Needless to say, I will be trusting the actual official notification of said recall will soon be appearing in my mailbox; well, as fast as our Dear Canada Post folks can deliver it...

But I also could not help but think, of how we are, all steering through life, one way or another, and especially what with this being summertime, aka, road work season, and the myriad of detours and waits, etc, we often encounter. How then are we 'steering' along our life's journey? Have we taken the odd detour, for whatever reason? Have we stopped, for whatever reason, to examine said path, and review where we have come from, and where we are going to, or at least, WANT to go to?

I for one, have had a sudden stop in my life, as some of you know; what with a car accident February 9th of this year, that not only caused whiplash, but some discs in my back to now be affecting the spinal cord, and then an emergency gall bladder operation February 11th. Yes, that was a "Fun" week, which has resulted in me being off work since then...Some would say, "wow, lots of time off, eh?" While the reality is, my 'life' as it were, is limited, frustrating, and 24/7 nerve/muscle pain, and now walking many a time needing the aid of a cane...

But, again, being me, I am still with a smile and a laugh, because, the alternative, curling up in a ball and whimpering like a wimp, is just not ME. LOL. But, what IS at 'the end' of our life's journey? How are we preparing for it? I say some of the above, because, needless to say, it certainly gives one time to think...Think...and THINK...Yes, as you all know, I do believe in God, and all that "Real" Christianity encompasses; but, to really REALLY evaluate my whole life, what I have done, where I have 'come from', and too, where I am 'going' has been even more on my mind, and heart and soul...

As I write this, I have thought of literally everyone I am related to, Great Friends with, and acquainted with in my life, and I also quite literally, Thank God for my every remembrance of you all (To paraphrase the Apostle Paul) Without even one of you, I would not be "The Guy" that I am today...Oh, I know, I certainly not perfect; ask my wife LOL. But, I do feel God has Blessed me with Family and Friends, that have been with me at the "Perfect Time" in many a low point along my 'Journey'.

I can say, in spite of my 'woes', that I am truly a Blessed man, for having such souls as you all in my life; And too, not to lament, but as we all progress along our individual roads, we should take care to avoid too many 'failures' if we can, learn from the ones we have gone through, and also help a friend in need.

As my Good Friend Ron Duffy once said to me, "Bill, for a guy that has gone through so many falls in your life, you always seem to bounce back and rise up even higher each time." Ron is right; but I certainly have not done it all alone...Yes, there have been some 'recalls', aka 'alerts/warnings', which also sometimes there were 'failures/wrong choices', but with God and YOU ALL, my deepest gratitude is expressed...

"Be Prepared", the good old Scouting Adage, is what I wish for each and every one of you for what is ahead...

Royalty vs. Reality?

Well, as the world watched, (for the most part, except a few ‘Nationalistic Quebecers’) with excitement, enthusiasm, and adoration, the visit by William (Great name, lol) and Kate to Canada, the outpouring of ‘their’ souls to us was very much felt. As they toured this ‘bigger than the USA’ country of ours and took part in a myriad of activities and openings, etc, one could not help but take a great liking to the Royal Couple; they certainly did personify, what many think the ultimate Royal image should be, that of being in touch with the masses.

While their parents and grandparents and those before them certainly have been respected by most, they did have that image more of having an invisible barrier from being ‘in touch’ with the common man/woman. With countless cameras clicking and videos running, Will and Kate took quite a few unscheduled walkabouts to the admiring crowds to take individual time and effort in speaking to so many. One could say, especially with the Slave Lake visit, that they were truly a couple that cared…

How too is the relationship we hope, or should have, with the very one who created us…the one that, while maintaining somewhat in the Old Testament, a ‘Royal Distance’, so to speak, in dealing with we mere mortals, it was when He sent His only Begotten Son, the King of Kings, the ultimate in ‘Royalty’ as it were, to live directly among us here on good ol’ Planet Earth…

And live among us He did…to the indignant response of the ‘Religious Powers’ of the day, that scorned his mingling and interaction with prostitutes, thieves, murderers, etc. Yes, Jesus did that, and so much more…Sadly, over the years, many a ‘Religious Denomination’ has slowly turned the ‘image’ of Jesus from that of one who lived among us, ate with us, worked along side of us, rejoiced with us, grieved with us, and yes, died FOR us, to that of an unreachable, ‘Royal’, that is out of our grasp, touch, and even ‘mere mortal’ comprehension…

Not to get on the soapbox here, but, how many ‘Religious Leaders’ have we seen over history since Jesus walked among us, that we can really say, “Now THERE is a person with reality, substance, and caring.”…Yes, we can name a few, like Mother Theresa, David Wilkerson, and a few more, but so many ‘Religious Leaders’, while perhaps started out as maybe somewhat caring, etc, have turned into images of idolatry themselves…

I will not start a list; you all can think of a great many, that are no doubt coming to your minds already…

In summary, always examine, always even test, those with ‘Royal’ attitudes…because, in the end, it is the ones with ‘Reality’ showing, that we should really be watching for…

Changes?

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Yes, on this day, our 144th ‘National Birthday’ in Canada, many of us have sung this, or will be singing this, our National Anthem; which as most are aware, has been under fire, trial, and tribulation over the years, for it’s very words. It has either been certain special interest groups wanting the ‘sexist’ (“…in all thy SONS command…’) words changed to gender neutral wording, or, worse yet, various ‘secularist’ groups (Read: Atheists/Agnostics) wanting the word “God” taken out all together…

Well, Bless their legal and political hearts, even the Canadian Cabinet a few years ago, after 3/4 of the Canadian population responded, decided to just leave it alone; the Canadian National Anthem is fine just the way it is. Great news actually, when most of us realize the gender inclusive wording, does include all, (Mankind = both males & females) and “God” does still have a place today in our society.

Even when sometimes we feel North American society as a whole is on a slippery slope downward in its morals, ideologies and beliefs, at least a poll of 3/4 (75%) of Canadians still want “God” in our cherished, beloved song of National Pride, to be kept in it.

Far be it for me to speak out against the other 1/4 (25%) of Canadians ‘against’ God, or at least the naming of Him, but, one wonders, in 10, 20, 30 years or more, will there be yet another poll taken, and what would those results be?

At least for today, most of us still believe, if even in spoken word only, in a ‘Higher being/power/deity’…How has your belief in Him been lately?

Expectations

“Expectations”…We all have them, some more than others of course, and at different times in our lives, most often when either a crisis arises or a somewhat drastic change to our proverbial “comfort zone”. Let’s face it folks, we mere mortals, if we were all honest with ourselves, enjoy our comfort zones, ruts, and complacent way of lives.

But, it would seem as of late, once again we have witnessed others, some high-profile individuals, are not happy with ‘The Norm’; why, take Mr Conrad Black for example…He was very much hoping (along with his fainting prone spouse) to get BACK to somewhat of a comfort zone; away from prison and exile, from his perceived freedom and way of life. But as we saw, the presiding judge chose instead to impose even more jail time for his sentence.

Canada Postal employees also have been highlighted lately as well; some would say, they are striving for even MORE of a ‘comfort’ zone, but I am certainly not about to judge the inner workings of a zealous, if not inflexible, union leader’s thoughts and intents. Ironically, the government wishes to impose a compensation package, that is even less that what the Canada Post’s management officials were willing to offer.

So, when does one draw the line at what to settle for, or what to continue to ‘fight’ for? It has been often quoted, that when good men remain silent, evil will flourish, but to what extent are we willing to remain in our comfort zones, when we DO see wrong-doings, immoral behaviours and/or ideologies shouting to be heard, and accepted as ‘normal’?

Before some will accuse me of stepping up onto the proverbial soap box, just a thought to consider; just only a few short years ago, many things we see today as what more are calling ‘normal’, and seemingly ‘accepted’ by society as a whole, were then looked upon AS immoral, wrong, and, well, I’ll say it; sinful…

Perhaps society’s very moral compass has either shifted, or a more ‘magnetic pull’ has been influencing it? How is YOUR ‘Moral Compass’ as of late?

What are YOUR ‘Expectations’ for a future for your children, and grandchildren?

"Only in Canada"? Really?

For those of you, that like myself, watched in disbelief and disappointment that the hoped for Vancouver Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins, were most likely not realizing of what mass destruction there would soon be on the streets outside after said game.

Yes, we Canadians wanted the Stanley Cup back on ‘home soil’, and a tip o the hat at least, for Vancouver taking the challenge to 7 games, but, the horrors that have been now seen replayed many a time, on the numerous TV and news channels, is almost surrealistic. This could not be happening in “OUR” country, could it? That is Vancouver we are seeing? Those are Canadians bent on endless carnage and destruction?

Sadly, yes, our so-called ’polite image’ as a country, yea, citizens we often portray to the world, was shattered deeply and painfully this past Wednesday night. To say this was something that sprung forth after the game because of the loss, and that it was simple pent up frustration because of said loss, would be naive thinking at best. Folks, this was plain and simple premeditated criminal acts, however carefully planned or not beforehand, but nonetheless, the core group of instigators were clearly out for pre-thought out destruction.

“Why?” is the question that has often been asked, and has even baffled many a member of the news media and their various commentators.

Well, the thing is, this kind of behaviour is becoming more apparent and more aggressive and happening much more often than even we sheltered Maritimers may care to admit. Violence is world-wide Folks; take a long hard look in any newspaper, TV news show, and especially the 24/7 internet news venues; Mankind is, excuse the expression, hell-bent on destruction by whatever means many men (and women) can accomplish.

From the west coast of Canada, to the continued strife in many Middle East countries, violence is seemingly the common denominator. When will it end? Well, the thing is, it will continue, and to an even greater scale than even being seen at present. Yes, even the Bible warns in various prophetic passages, that events like this and others will be ushering in the “End Times”.

I for one, will not be planning any Middle East trips anytime soon, nor will I plan to be in any cities where ANY final game of any sports series will be played; I kinda still value my safety these days, and too, not to sound like a plan for being a Hermit either anytime soon, but, sometimes, the safety of one’s home, is apparently better than out in the streets with large crowds…

Pray my Dear Friends…that someday it will not be US being drug out into the streets for whatever reason…

Busted?

And so once again, we have heard about yet another politician that has, PLEASE excuse the expression, ‘been caught with his pants down’…As we all no doubt watched the story unfold of how initially he denied the photos being sent by Twitter, to then various phases of admitting to it, and then to discover there was more than one female who received said pictures?

Honestly, are there no moral standards anymore as to what conduct our elected officials should be held accountable to? This one refuses (so far) to resign, even amongst a public outcry that he should. Smugness, arrogance, indifference, and certainly, careless disregard for marital fidelity seems to be more and more the common ground for politicians, entertainment stars, sports ‘heroes’, and others in the proverbial spotlight.

Is this an epidemic? Is it something new? Well, no…History is rife with various leaders and other note-worthy individuals trying to get away with, (Yes, I will say it) sin…However their mindset started with a plan, idea, concept, to then end up as the subject of public ridicule and debate, the fact still remains, “Hey, you’re busted!”
Yes, even so-called religious leaders over the years have also fallen prey to temptations of one sort or another, and strayed, fallen and have been defeated.

Interestingly enough, most who daily live ‘that lifestyle’, have convinced themselves, they are ‘ok’, and not doing anything wrong; funny enough though, when someone famous, especially a religious leader gets caught in something wrong, they are usually the first ones to point the finger and go “Ah HA! See! THEY are sinning!”…almost as though, they are trying to justify their own wrong-doings in their lives?

I am not saying any one of us should be perfect, but, maybe just suggesting that, as we have too often seen, the more you try to hide something, the more likely it will be discovered?

Another Milestone...

And so, Oprah has left officially, a major network TV outlet, with a great deal of fanfare, etc, over her ‘retirement’. She is of course now going to devote her time to other ‘Media Projects’, such as her own Television Network Channel, but one cannot help but wonder, who will fill, what many feel to be, a void on afternoon TV?

I would be the first one to admit, Oprah has done a great many things, for even a greater number of people. Her rise to stardom from humble and troubled beginnings is a marvel in itself, for what she has overcome and accomplished. However, I can not help but remember, on more than one show, her sometimes outright denial of Jesus being the only way to Heaven. Some of you may even recall but a few short years ago, her ‘argument’ with some members of her audience, who were clearly Born Again Christians, about the importance of Jesus and His ‘role’ in our very salvation.

I am not here to belittle her vast accomplishments, but rather to point out, that even someone as popular as her, even someone who does ‘great works’, and even someone like her who does promote a ‘good life’ with moral values, that very person still has publicly denied Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.

Now, before I am accused of running down Oprah, do remember as well, what were some of her most popular shows? Yes, the ones in which she gave away many “things”; material possessions, ‘Bling’ for the most part. Yes, for our consumer mentality driven North American mind-set, these were quite the shows indeed.

But, to bring up the spiritual aspect again, as popular as she is, and with all that she has done, remember, she still at the end of the day, denies Jesus as the one we all need to rely on for our eternal destination, not for a few mere objects to get that ever so brief ‘feel good’ moment.
I need not remind my fellow believers, that our often prophesied about ‘End Times’ are undoubtedly closer than most would care to admit. I am certainly not the one to draw the proverbial line in the sand for anyone to consider who we should ‘support’ or ‘follow’ here on good ol’ Planet Earth, but at the same time, should we not perhaps examine our ‘idols’, and who we ‘should’ be ultimately following as # 1?

Rapture Anyone?

Well Folks, as I start to type this, having waited until 6:01 Eastern Time, it is apparently obvious that my wife and I have NOT been caught up and away in Mr. Harold Camping’s prediction of the Christian Rapture. While that prophesied event is something that I as a Christian do believe in, I also believe in Jesus’s words in Matthew’s Gospel, that clearly tell us, that no man knows the day or hour of this and/or Christ’s return.

Having been wrong once before, back in 1994, one would have presumed that Poor old Harold would have clued in then; he is but a mere mortal, with obviously no inside connection to the mind of Almighty Jehovah. But nope, for many a month now, Mr. Camping has been proclaiming HIS so-called spiritual math formula to whoever will listen.

Needless to say, the secular, and even some Christian, media venues have been having a field day with this ‘news’. Those of us who do follow Biblical teachings and Prophecy, do realize “The End Times” are indeed near; but to, for whatever misguided reason, we would dare peg down the precise hour of ‘The Rapture’, is at best an effort in futility. One could even dare make the statement, that to try to do such a thing, borders even on blasphemy?

As I continue to type, I have not felt any world-wide earthquake, nor are the heavens ablaze with any impending doom from above either. I do feel pity for Mr. Camping’s followers however, as in, to have followed so blindly his ‘interpretations’, and now to be the subject of ridicule. Jesus Himself warned about many a false prophet, that would foretell of things even in His name; while I am at best, feeling that maybe Mr. Camping’s intentions were possibly good, his understanding, or lack thereof, of certain key Bible verses clearly lead one to believe this was more about his ‘Spiritual Ego’, rather than his knowledge and allowing of God’s long-standing word to be followed.

Having said all of that, we still must remember, this event, and many other ‘End Times’ happenings will occur, and sooner than we may care to admit.

Freaky Frantic Fabulous Fantastic Friday Feelings

http://wphb1957.wordpress.com/

So, as per the latest news reports in the entertainment world, Mr Demi Moore (Ashton silly!) will be ‘replacing’ Charlie Sheen on Two and a Half Men.

While he apparently will not be replacing the actual character Mr. Sheen portrayed, he will be a new character addition to the show; at a smaller salary as well, go figure. ;-)

Several other names had been bounced around the media moguls think tanks, but, ta da, Ashton will be ‘The Pick’.

Change is always happening in our world, and will continue to do so, but one wonders now, what will poor old Tiger Blood Charlie do now?

While the spotlight is less apparent on him lately, his ‘winning’ streak seems to be diminishing as rapidly as the flood waters are rising in the Mississippi. Perhaps Charlie may return to the big screen? Perhaps some other network will snatch him up for another project? Time will tell, but methinks Charlie is not completely down and out…yet…

If there are to be some things we should all learn from this, staying sane, having at least some morals, and kinda watching the words coming forth from one’s mouth are but a few to have one’s life on a ‘true’ winning streak.

“Happy Mother’s Day!”

Yes, that phrase almost all of us are either hearing, or saying today, to Mothers, Mother-in-laws, Grandmothers, all over both near and far. For what your Mother has meant to you over the years, whether or not she is still on good ol’ Planet Earth with you, or has passed on to be with God in Heaven, is the focus of this day of Homage to our Maternal Parent.

And to say there have been some very famous Mothers over the years, ‘Eve’ included, would certainly be an enormous understatement. Mother Theresa (although not a biological Mother, in the strict sense of the word, but a great ‘Mother’ all the same) may come to mind for many, while I am sure many more are already filtering through your thoughts as you read this, including even Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

It is also perhaps fitting that within the calendar year, Mother’s Day is celebrated before Father’s Day, in that, Mothers often bring to mind images of renewal, refreshment emotionally and that life does have the various cycles we go through year to year. If you have not already taken at least the time to even give your Mother a phone call today, perhaps do so now… (I already called, got her voicemail… haha!)

Tell her you love her, and remind her of what she means to you. She is the only one you had; remember and cherish that fact always. No Mother was ever perfect, but yours was perfect for ‘you’.
